Here\u2019s a quick breakdown of the most important ones:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The process is more effective on hair colors that are already lighter<\/strong> and is less effective on darker hair colors. This is a bummer for many people as it\u2019s usually those with dark hair colors that want to lighten them up. Yet, the \u201ccolor scale\u201d of photobleaching goes something like this:\n<ul>\n<li>Blonde hair gets lighter blonde.<\/li>\n<li>Light brown hair gets dark blonde.<\/li>\n<li>Red hair can turn into strawberry blonde or ginger-red.<\/li>\n<li>Medium brown hair may get lighter brown.<\/li>\n<li>Dark brown and black hair tends to be unaffected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photobleaching is affected by your genetic makeup.<\/strong> Gene testing companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.23andme.com\/en-int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">23 &amp; Me<\/a> have pointed out that there are dozens of genes that affect photobleaching. The gist of it comes down to people of European descent being more affected by photobleaching than other ethnicities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sun bleaches hair more effectively in combination with saltwater.<\/strong> Both saltwater and chlorine affect keratine which is a protein in our hair. This process can further enhance the photobleaching process but dark brown and black hair will still be unaffected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lemon juice\u2019s acidity works well with the sun\u2019s UV rays<\/strong> and speeds up the breaking of the melanin. So, if you want to speed up the creation of those \u201csun-kissed highlights\u201d, you can follow this quick guide:\n<ul>\n<li>mix the juice of half a lime and half a lemon.<\/li>\n<li>add warm water to the lemon &amp; lime juice in a 1:1 ratio<\/li>\n<li>load the mixture into a spray bottle and spray your clean but dry hair until it\u2019s soaking wet<\/li>\n<li>put some sunscreen on your skin and go sunbathing until your hair dries up<\/li>\n<li>shower, shampoo, and condition your hair immediately after that<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>A process like that will speed up the photobleaching effect even more than saltwater<\/strong> would but it still affects the same hair colors as above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Naturally, whatever you do, you need to keep your skin health in mind too.
